I am not a number...

...I'm a free cartoonist. Or at least I was the day I did this drawing for charity. It was sold at the PM2005 event 9 years ago, a convention for enthusiasts of the 1960s The Prisoner TV series. The event took place in Portmeirion in North Wales, where the outdoor locations for the series were filmed. A good time was had by all and all the profits went to the Ty Gobaith Hope House Children's Hospice

This week's Rasher preview

Here's a clipping from the Rasher strip I did for this week's Beano (on sale now). One thing I like about doing stuff for The Beano is that it's a shared universe (or shared Beanotown at any rate) so I get the chance to put characters in from other strips. This week, Bones from Pup Parade guest stars again.

As Rasher can only be seen to speak to other animals, not humans, it's useful to have various Beano pets turn up from time to time. Bones and a couple of other Bash Street Dogs will also be seen with Rasher in this year's Beano Annual (on sale from July).

Drawing Brickman, 1985

There's me on 8th September 1985, 26 years old drawing a Brickman story for Swiftsure No.6.

Swiftsure was an independent anthology comic published by Martin Lock's Harrier Comics company. It did actually pay a page rate. Not as much as the big companies, but it paid.

I was still living at my mum's house back then, in case you were wondering about the floral wallpaper! I used the spare room as a studio. Well, I say studio. A flat table to draw on, and the rest of the room piled up with comics. Different address now, and I have a proper drawing board, but I'm still surrounded by comics.

Want to see the story I was drawing that day 29 years ago? Here you go...

This strip and more can be seen in the Brickman Begins! book, available from my website. The book is advised for mature readers only as it's a bit rude in places:

Here's a preview of half of my Rasher mini-strip from today's Beano. This was drawn a couple of months ago but I guessed that by the time it saw print we'd be having an early heatwave. (I always try to tie my strips in with the seasons if possible.) Some weather forecasters have also predicted one for this coming week. It's a bit cool and cloudy today but we'll see how the rest of the next seven days pan out. Whatever the outcome, it's always bright in Beanotown!

Smasher Preview

I sent off another couple of completed pages for The Dandy Annual 2016 today. Working on more tomorrow. And the day after that. And next week. I won't show you previews of those for a long time yet because the book won't be out for at least another 14 months!

However, what I will show you is a panel (above) from The Dandy Annual 2015, which should be in the shops sometime in July of this year. As you can see, The Smasher is back again, and I'm pleased to say that I wrote/drew/coloured/lettered five pages of his smashing strips for the book. (Plus I illustrated an extra puzzle page featuring the character.)

I have a few other pages in the book too, and I'll show you glimpses of those at a later date.

The Dandy comic had a great 75 year run, and I'm sure we all miss it, but I'm happy that the annual is continuing. Long may it carry on.

I've just put my original artwork on eBay for an Unlucky Frank strip that I drew for Viz No.219 a couple of years ago. Frank's a character I've only drawn a few times but it's fun to do stories about that accident-prone chap.

Bidding ends in 7 days, on Sunday May 25th, so good luck to any of you who go for it. All bids are much appreciated. Click HERE to go to my eBay page.

Walter!

Here's Dennis the Menace's nemesis, Walter, who guest stars in this week's Rasher mini-strip. If Rasher's nearby, you can guess what happens to that cake.

We're nearing the end of Rasher's run in The Beano now. Only another few weeks to go. I've really enjoyed writing and drawing his porcine pranks. Too busy to miss him at present though as I'm knee-deep in various pages for the 2016 annuals. Then there's the mini-strip that's replacing Rasher. What will that be? Find out soon!

This week's Beano is bagged with a bunch of decent gifts including a 32 page Diary of Dennis the Menace book preview, a K'nex toy, Star Wars cards and more. £2.99 from newsagents and supermarkets. Here's the front and back of the package so you know what to look out for...

Lord Snooty returns!

As Beano subscribers have now been informed of the news I guess it's OK to reveal that the mystery mini-strip I've been working on is Lord Snooty

The character who first appeared in The Beano No.1 back in 1938 has had several runs of various length in the comic over the past 76 years and I consider it a privilege to be the latest cartoonist to bring his tales to a new readership.

For me, Snooty's original artist Dudley Watkins will always be the definitive one, and I enjoyed reading those stories as a child in the sixties. I'm not trying to imitate the style of the late Mr.Watkins in any way but I was asked to retain Snooty's classic look with the bowtie, white collar, black jacket and of course his top hat. There'll also be a few of his old Pals turning up from time to time along with the local bullies The Gasworks Gang. It's quite a formidable task taking on such a legendary character as Lord Snooty but I hope the readers enjoy the strips.

The new series of Lord Snooty mini-strips that I've written and drawn will begin in The Beano No.3737, on sale Wednesday 4th June.

Lord Snooty starts today!

This week's issue of The Beano sees the start of my new Lord Snooty mini-strip. I'm privileged to be the latest artist to write and draw this classic character (who first appeared in The Beano No.1 in 1938) and I hope Snooty's new exploits prove entertaining.

There's a preview pic above, and below is a photograph of the original artwork before I filled in more of the blacks and scanned it into Photoshop to apply the colour.

The latest Beano also features my penultimate Rasher strip. Out with the old, in with the new!

The last Rasher

I understand that there's no Rasher strip in next week's Beano so presumably the one in the current issue is the last. There is one strip that hasn't been published but perhaps that'll be used at a later date.

Anyway, the strip in the current issue is the last one I drew and, as you can see from the panel above, Rasher takes a holiday by the seaside, which I felt would be appropriate for the final one.

I've really enjoyed writing and drawing the Rasher mini-strips and I hope he'll return one day. In the meantime, I'm busy on Lord Snooty and drawing pages for the 2016 annuals.

A Snooty preview

Here's a quick glimpse at the second Lord Snooty mini-strip that I did. You can read the full strip in the latest Beano, on sale now!

How's the availability of The Beano in your area? Stock has been drastically cut back in my town this week but I managed to buy the one copy that my local WH Smiths had. No sign of it in any other newsagent in the town centre on the day of publication.

Retail and wholesale are a bit of a mystery to me but from what a local newsagent told me, the wholesaler calls the shots, treating publications like any other 'brand'. Your corner shop might order six copies of a title, knowing he'll sell them, but the wholesaler sometimes supplies them with less, encouraging the shop to take another 'brand' (ie: comic) as a try out! Then a newsagent elsewhere gets the extra copies of the comic that the other newsagent wanted, just so the wholesaler can see 'how they perform' in that area.

It's probable that the newsagent can get more copies if they insist, but that takes extra effort and they have a lot of stock to deal with as it is. Most would think it wasn't worth their time to complain.

It seems like absolute madness to treat comics like tins of baked beans, and is surely detrimental to any publisher. I would hope that anyone with a standing order would still be able to get their copy from their shops, but what about casual buyers, or people like me who prefer to buy them off the shelf? The Beano was selling well in my area, but this week there are going to be some disappointed children who won't be able to get a copy unless their parents travel around searching shops out of town. A week is a long time for a child, and if they start to miss copies it's not long before they lose the habit of buying it at all.

Anyway, if you can grab a copy, The Beano is out now, priced just £2.

A trio of Tom Thugs

It's Tom Thug Weekend on eBay! (Well, according to me anyway.) There are three pages of original Tom Thug artwork up for auction, which ends this Sunday (15th June).

Each page is from a different period of the strip's run:

The 1988 Easter theme page from the early days when Tom Thug was in Oink!

One of the first Tom Thug's Skooldayz pages from just after Oink! had merged into Buster. (1988)

A full colour Tom Thug on 'Oliday page from the later years of the strip's run in Buster. (1993)

All bids are very welcome. I will of course combine postage if you win more than one page.

You can see more photos of the artwork on my eBay page here:

Good luck!

The Gasworks Gang 2014

One of the things I'm enjoying about working on the Lord Snooty strip is that I'm bringing in some of his old supporting characters. That includes Snooty's enemies The Gasworks Gang! (No relation to the gang of the same name who later appeared in IPC's Cor!! of course.)

I always enjoyed seeing this surly, scruffy band of bullies getting their comeuppance in the Lord Snooty strips of the 1960s. I've redesigned them a bit but they're still the same resentful bunch of thugs, - and they'll still get their just deserts if they mess with Snooty!

Lord Snooty appears in The Beano every Wednesday. Only £2.
